There is a mistaken belief among some people that ‘going green’ and trying to use less energy has to be a big deal and will take you a lot of time. People think that it must take effort to save the planet (Superman never makes it look easy…) and that it’s something they need to give a lot of time and thought to. For these reasons (and several others), many people just don’t get round to changing their lifestyles to make them better for the planet. This is a big mistake though as there’s plenty you can do to make a difference that will take no time at all. Here are a few examples of things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint that require barely any effort at all and won’t take more than a minute of your time. This is how easier it really is – so no more excuses!
Ten Tiny Changes
Fill the Kettle Up Less: It’s a simple matter that more water requires more energy to boil. If you fill the kettle all the way up whenever you make tea then that’s a lot of water wasted needlessly – so just don’t do it.
Turn the Tap Off When You Brush: Do you keep the tap running while you’re brushing your teeth? Because that water requires a lot of energy to be cleaned and brought back into circulation so again if you’re not using it you’re wasting energy. Just turn it off in between.
Use Organic Fertilizer: Just choose the organic option instead of the synthetic version and then use it exactly the same. It’s better for your health too.
Unplug Your Charger: Do you leave your phone charger plugged in all day when you’re at work? Even if nothing is charging you’re wasting energy, so just remove it.
Turn Your Phone Brightness Down: You don’t need it to be full brightness and once you’ve done it once it will stay that way and your phone will last longer before needing to be charged.
Turn the TV Off: Not on standby. The only difference is that you need to turn the TV back on before you sit down. Come on, you can do it.
Run Your Cold Water First: Why? Because if you run the hot water first in your bath then you will release steam into the room which will sap the energy from your walls. That and your hot water won’t be cooling down when you’re running the cold so you’ll need less. This takes the exact same amount of time, but is marginally more energy efficient.
Pump Up Your Tires: Okay so this might take five minutes rather than two, but you’ll save a lot more time as a result once you’ve topped up your tires because you’ll get everywhere quicker.
Remove Heavy Things From Your Boot: Heavy objects in your boot weigh the car down so that it requires more fuel to power. Take them out and that petrol will get you further.
Use Energy Saving Bulbs: Again it’s just a matter of choosing the right product but it saves you money and saves the planet energy.
